Moth and Moth Wing Pre-Order Event – 5th December 2017, 6.30pm GMT

For some time now I have been planning to do a one-off pre-order / custom order event for my moths and moth wings. I have had a lot of requests for custom orders since I started making them and have always had to refuse as I felt I might have to disappoint other people who subsequently asked for them. Plus, they take a long time to make! Usually I make a handful for each shop update, and they are always among the first things to go. I’ve decided to go ahead and I’ll be running the event on Tuesday, 5thDecember at 6.30pm GMT. I hope folks’ purses won’t be too cleared out after cyber weekend.  Treat yourself early now before you have to give up your funds to everyone else!

I’ll be offering two styles of moth and two styles of moth wings  – Original and Dot-work in both cases. I will be selling them on Etsy with listings for each (www.somethingtodobeads.etsy.com). There will be multiple quantities available on each listing. I haven’t done an event like this before, and I haven’t tested Etsy’s resilience when it comes to quickly renewing a listing when it is bought, especially if it is bought several times in a short space of time. So, I plan to have eight listings, two for each design, spreading the quantity across them, to cover for any glitches that may occur.  Should you find you can’t see the listing you’re looking for, please try refreshing the page. I haven’t decided exactly how much quantity I will be offering of each design but it will be limited. I will probably start with around 25 of each and if they sell out, I will add more (until I feel the numbers are getting too much!), so do check back. As ever, any additional shipping payments will be refunded. I will be putting the listings up at 6.30pm GMT and they will be up for 24 hours OR until they run out.  As there will be limited quantities, I’d ask that people only buy a maximum of two moths and two pairs of moth wings – at least to start with. I’ll keep people posted if I open this up.

I do hope this is all making sense!

I should mention now that the prices for the pieces in this event will be higher than those you may have paid if you’ve managed to buy one previously. As I usually only have a few, I have allowed myself to price them a little low. If I have to make a large number I can no longer convince myself those prices are fine. I would hate for this to be seen as greed or an attempt to cash in. Just applying the coloured decoration to one of the simpler pairs of moth wings takes about an hour at least. Add to this the forming, the carving, the sanding, the firing, the staining, more sanding, the glazing, the second firing… I hope you can begin to see that they are pretty labour intensive!

So, the prices will be as follows:

Original Wings – £19.00 (approx. $25.00).
Dot-Work Wings – £21.50 (approx. $28.00)
Original Moths – £26.50 (approx. $35.00)
Dot-Work Moths – £29.00 (approx. $38.00)

There are a few more details to let you know about: You will be able to specify three main colours that you would like used on your pieces. You can do this either when you place your order or in a convo after you place your order.  (Please don’t message me with colour choices before the event, as it will make it harder to keep a record of things.)  As I will use other ‘sympathetic’ shades (nothing wild or leftfield) that I feel will work with your chosen palette, you can also specify any colour (eg. orange) or shade of colour (eg. chartreuse or lime green) that you particularly do not want me to use.  It is more helpful if you list your colour choices rather than messaging me pictures of past moths and wings I’ve made: it will make it simpler for me to collate all the information ready for decorating them.

The moth pendants are made from porcelain and are fired to a higher temperature – this gives a lovely finish but means that a more limited range of colours can be used as not all those I have can survive the higher temperatures. I can use a broader range of colours on the wings, which are low fired and glazed differently. As a guide, when you are picking your colours for either moths or moth wings, you can select from the following lists. The general colours listed (e.g. Blues) will range from pale to dark with a greater variety on the wings:
MOTH COLOURS:

Reds               Pale Neutrals                         Black                         Greens
Orange            Purples                                  Sandy Neutrals         Turquoise
Yellows            Blues                                     Dark Brown

MOTH WING COLOURS

Reds               Peach                                   Greens                      Greys
Orange           Pinks                                     Turquoise                  Beiges
Yellows           Purples                                  Blues                        Browns
Black

I do hope this doesn’t seem overly convoluted. I am really trying to make the process as simple as possible!

A few final things. I will start work on these when the orders come in. I will, however, be taking a break over Christmas so that will delay things a little.  I plan to have them ready by mid to late January. My aim is to time their completion to coincide with a larger bead shop update of other designs. If I haven’t finished producing all the items I want to make for the update when I finish the moths and wings, and it is getting towards the end of January, I will postpone the update until the start of February – simply because many people tend to feel a little low on funds at the end of January. If this happens, I will contact everyone individually and see if they want their moths sending out straight away or if they’d prefer to wait for the update.

I think that’s everything! Please do get in touch if you have any questions whatsoever! The comments facility on this blog is worse than useless right now so send your questions through Etsy. Here’s a link to the shop: www.somethingtodobeads.etsy.com. Alternatively, you can message me directly using this address: somethingtodobeads@gmail.com

I’ll hope to see you on Tuesday evening! – 5th December, 6.30pm GMT – www.somethingtodobeads.etsy.com
